  1. Relatives are flying in from abroad, the cake and venue are booked months in advance and the entire family is excited about celebrating the big day. No, we’re not talking about weddings – it’s all about the very important first birthday!

We have clients who order cakes the same size as the average wedding cake for a first birthday, as turning 1 is seen as such a special event. In Hindu traditions, first birthdays are particularly significant, and we recently made a tiered princess cake for more than 100 people for a little girl’s first birthday celebration.

But although the size may be the same as a wedding cake, the designs are very different. The challenge for parents planning a first birthday is often choosing a theme, as the little ones may not have any obvious interest or favourite cartoon characters.

To help you start planning the perfect day, here are some suggestions for picking a theme:
    • Colours are a must when it comes to first birthdays! We recently made this impressive-looking bright pink butterfly castle for a little girl, for example, which was a huge hit. Prince or princess castle cakes are popular choices for first birthdays because they look so amazing, and they make exquisite centerpieces.

    • Mickey and Minnie are popular for all ages! We’re often asked to do Baby Minnie and Baby Mickey cakes for our youngest birthday girls and boys. The baby versions are adorable and perfect for first birthdays

    • Babies love their animals! Animal-themed birthdays are always fun. While older children might opt for a jungle-theme, little ones can have an elephant-party or a giraffe-party, for example. The cake may be a copy of the baby’s favourite soft toy or from a book you read to your baby at bedtime

  2. If you don’t have a wedding scrap book from your childhood like some women in movies have, you’re not the only one. Not everyone has planned every little detail of their wedding before even finding a loved one, but it doesn’t mean your wedding will be any less perfect. You have the chance to be creative and plan the most beautiful, fun, elegant and personal wedding - and it all starts with setting a theme!

We meet new brides all the time to discuss themes and possible cake designs, and here are some of our top tips for how to decide on a wedding theme:

    • Find your dream dress. If you’ve found your wedding dress, you can use this as inspiration. The style of the dress will most likely impact the theme, and the lackework and drapes on the dress can even match your wedding cake.

    • Pick a colour. This is also a great starting point, as it’s much easier to do the rest of the work if you have a favourite colour in mind.

    • Decide on flowers. Many brides choose to use the same flowers in the bouquet, in the venue, and on the cake. On the cake, you can have either fresh flowers or sugar flowers.

    • Find the perfect venue. The venue will play an important part in choosing a theme, and if you go for a modern building your theme may be very different than if you go for a Victorian building.

    • Be inspired by celebrity weddings. Look through magazines and find photos of A-list table decorations and dresses. When Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got married, we had many brides turning up with photos of their wedding cake and wanting the same for their own dream day!
And when it comes to the cake: If you can dream it, we can create it!
